Dear Judge,
Welcome to the third annual Mr. Gay World competition. We are honoured that you
have agreed to act as a judge and your decisions over the next few days will make a
major impression on the success of our ventures in 2011. We have invited you to
assist us in this enviable task, because we feel you share our ambition to build
understanding between the peoples of the world and enhance the gay citizenship of
our brothers and sisters. We in MGW make our small contribution to celebrating the
positive gay identity, by bringing diverse and talented young men together in Manila.
In many instances we have national producers who hold events in small rural towns,
cities, in community groups and in commercial premises to encourage young gay
men to be visible in their community. Many contestants win national titles and you
will meet them in Manila. Many others do not have the freedom to associate together
as gay people in their own countries, but still want to break the mould, so we accept
their nomination to represent their country in MGW as a catalyst of change and we
applaud their courage. All of these young men will have donated their time, and in
many instances, their own money to get themselves to Manila and to present
themselves well to you. They deserve the best in integrity and respect and that‟s why
we have asked you to be a judge in this important event.
It is an easy task for anyone just to support candidates from your own country or
area and to promote them in the competition. That is not what your task is about,
and we know you fully understand that. The example set by judges to ensure the
best man will undertake this onerous and not financially rewarding role as Mr Gay
World 2011, is a vital component in our multi-national event. You will lead by
example in reaching out to other cultures, looking beyond the image, and the
designer labels, to find a young man we can all be proud of in any country or society,
free or prejudiced. The transparency and fairness of your assessment will give him
an unshakeable launching pad, and widespread confidence and support as he begins
his year when you reach your best decision. He will have courage, intellect, empathy,
sincerity, a passion for human rights, will set an example in health and respect for
himself and others, and as our gay brother. He will be amongst the best of us as he
is one of us. That is your task. Your generosity in accepting this invitation is a great
start – thank you. The carrying out of your role, researching the guys biographies,
and the countries and laws where they live shows great respect for them.
Your attitude can empower and enable them by your insightful and respectful questions.
When they meet you, they know they can be at their best when presenting
themselves to you and that you will only pick a worthy winner. Their positive
interaction with you will also develop and enhance their capacity as contestants, to
return to their own country as ambassadors for gay rights and decent societies. The
guys do not need you to advocate for them, they need your time, empathy and
respect for their contribution over the four days of tough and demanding
competition. Your expertise and obvious respect for the transparent search for the
best contestant will inspire confidence in the process and in each contestant for the
future. That alone is a prize worth winning and that experience is open to each
contestant in your capable company.
We are sure you will be as proud of them all as we are. We know they will learn from
you as they see you interact with them. The high standards you will set in the
adjudication process will be the benchmark of trust and confidence in what we try to
achieve in MGW. Your insight and diversity will help balance out the multi-cultural
challenges of a worldwide competition. We are proud to present you and our entire
panel of judges to our contestants as the best in the straight and gay community,
who will support them in ensuring that only merit will decide who our third annual Mr
Gay World will be. We have limited resources as we build this event. We will try our
best to be hospitable, efficient and clear. North American Director, Dean Nelson will
act as scrutineer to ensure confidentiality and accuracy in the marking system, and
European and African Director, and the Director of Rules and Policy, Brian Merriman
will be the only liaison between the Judges and MGW. It is essential the entire
process remains confidential and conferring is not encouraged between adjudicators
as the diversity of the panel will ensure the broadest perspective prevails, and
produces a most worthy winner.
We are sure you will find this a rewarding experience - it is a tough task. We are
delighted to rely on you, your expertise and integrity to ensure the transparency and
success of the MGW adjudication process in Manila. Our contestants are in good
hands. The best man will win!
Warm regards,
ERIC BUTTER
President and Founder
Mr Gay World.
